My Top 5 Reasons For Travelling
Before I was paralyzed, I did not get to travel very much. Once I was in a wheelchair, I realized life was not over and that travelling was still an option for me. I quickly made some really great friends to take me on some exciting and memorable trips to some really amazing places. I travelled to many places and highly recommend it to everyone. Here are my top 5 reasons for travelling:
1.) You never know how long you have to live
Life is short. I could have passed away when I had my car accident but didn’t. I have done so much since and been to so many places that I am grateful I survived. You are not guaranteed old age, so it is best to do as much now. If you keep procrastinating your travel plans, you may not even get a chance to do them. It is great to save money for old age, but please don’t exclude fun things like travelling in the meantime.
2.) Try new things
What great way to try new things than to be in a totally different city than your own. I love trying new foods and doing things that are out of my normal routine. I never realized how much I like Indian food until I visited India earlier this year. There were just so many kinds of dishes I never ordered before. Was also great doing the floating river market in Thailand… definitely can’t do that where I live.
3.) Learn about different cultures
I like escaping the norm and learn about new cultures while I am travelling. For example, in Dubai, during certain times throughout the day, they have speakers positioned around the city that goes off and reminds everyone it is prayer time. Also, seeing third world countries made me have a deeper appreciation for what I have at home. Not worrying about having the latest gadgets or trendy clothes as some people across the world don’t even have enough to eat, clothes or shelter.
4.) Cross things off my bucket list
I love saying that I have done that or been there. Having a bucket list actually motivates me to get out and do it. Like sky diving, being at The Great Wall of China, being atop Machu Picchu. I have actually crossed them off my bucket list. Yes, many bucket list sights are the main attractions of a country, but I also try to delve into the city and see how the locals live.
5.) Inspire others
Being disabled and in a wheelchair, I do like to inspire others to get out and do the same. Get out of your comfort zone and get on a plane to experience something new. I try to make every experience positive and post all my pictures and give a review of every place I visit. Some disabled person might see a picture of me sitting on a camel and get the courage to try to do it themselves or see me dune buggying in Vegas and would go out and try it, that would make me smile.
