Carnival Victory To Nassau, Bahamas

By on January 29, 2020

On my latest cruise in January 2020, I went on a 4 day Carnival Victory cruise from Miami to Bahamas.  I wrote about our first stop at Half Moon Cay and this article will be about our second and final stop.  Nassau will have a proper port so we wouldn’t have to worry about transferring to a tender boat to get to our destination.

Getting Off The Ship

Even though taking an accessible tender boat was not inconvenient or a hassle, getting off the ship when it is docked at the pier is a lot faster and easier.  There is a big movable ramp called a gangway put from the ship out to the pier.  The gangway was a bit steep and narrow, but again a Carnival staff took over and wheeled me backwards out.  I noticed that Carnival staff members are always really friendly and willing to help out.

Nassau

Nassau is the capital and largest city of The Bahamas.  Bay Street is the busiest street in Nassau and runs the entire length of the island from East to West.  It is located downtown in the city center and provides beachfront views and is right by Prince George Wharf which is the main port that serves cruise ships that has port of calls in Nassau.  It is very Americanized around this area with lots of shops, restaurants, banks and retail that could be found in any American city.  We saw a Rolex store, Senor Frogs and a Burger King all right by Bay Street.

Accessibility

The little shopping plaza connected to the port is restricted only to cruise passengers who want to be in Nassau but don’t want to get out into the city and interact with locals.  This whole plaza was very wheelchair accessible but also quite busy with tourists.

Once you leave the gated area, accessibility was still great to the areas around Bay Street.  We did not go further than a few blocks radius from the port but most sidewalks had curb cuts.  I do remember there were a few times where one side of the sidewalks didn’t have a curb cut so my buddy just bumped up my manual wheelchair over.  I think if we were to go deeper into the city, it would not be as wheelchair accessible.

Our Day

Since we got up later than expected, our time in Nassau was a bit limited.  We checked out the shopping plaza connected to the port and noticed everything for sale was a bit higher in price which was aimed at tourists.  Hanging near Bay Street, we still got to see all the colorful buildings that is common in Nassau.  We got to relax at one of the restaurants and had a cold drink and used the free wifi.

Even though we spent about 2 hours at this port of call, we still had an enjoyable time in Nassau and got a quick snapshot of the city.  Next time, I would love to find a taxi to check out the famous Atlantis hotel or Baha Mar Resort & Casino.  This city is definitely worth leaving the ship for to check out.
