Cubs Vs Phillies at Wrigley Field Chicago

By on May 26, 2020

Back in July 2011, I saw a great flight deal for a week in Chicago, that I decide to book it with a buddy.  I have not travelled much back then and was willing to go anywhere that was cheap.  Not only did we do the main tourist attractions of the city with CityPASS tickets, we went to see a baseball game at Wrigley Field.  I was never a huge fan of baseball but my buddy is a huge sports fan and thought it would be a great day to spend a day at the ball park.

Wrigley Field is a baseball park located in the north side of Chicago and is home to one of the city’s Major League Baseball (MLB). It opened in 1914 and by 1927, settled on the name Wrigley Field.  The park has a capacity to seat over 41,000 fans.  I have never been to a MLB game before and was excited to see the Chicago Cubs play the Philadelphia Phillies on a Wednesday afternoon at this iconic park.

Getting There

We were staying at Holiday Inn Express which was in the Magnificent Mile district.  This premier commercial district is vibrant and full of shops, restaurants, clothing stores and hotels.  Our hotel is less than a 5 minute walk/stroll to Grand subway station, which is what we are taking to get to Wrigley Field at Jackson subway station.  This station had elevators to get underground and the train was easy to get on.

The subway took only 10 minutes to get us to Jackson station and when we got there, Wrigley Field was only a few steps away.  We each bought a Chicago Cubs shirt so we could represent the team and had fun exploring the statues and the outer part of the ballpark.

Wrigley Field

Just like most sporting events, Wrigley Field does not offer free companion tickets for wheelchair guests who require help.  There were several accessible seating areas at different price points and locations throughout the ballpark and we picked somewhere in the middle.  To get to our seating area, they did have an old wheelchair lift that I got to use with the the help of a staff member.  I suspect accessibility has greatly improved since there were major renovations that were recently done to Wrigley Field in the past couple of years.

Wheelchair Section

Once we got up, there was a whole row of empty spots for wheelchairs.  The staff directed us to where my ticket spot designated us to be.  My buddy was then given a fold out chair so he could sit beside me for the game.  The view of the baseball diamond was pretty good with nothing blocking our vision.

arriving a bit early for the game

Instead of dealing with that really old wheelchair lift to leave the seating area to get food, my buddy went alone to concessions to get us hot dogs and drinks for us.  I didn’t mind waiting behind as I didn’t have to deal with the crowds.  It was such a hot sunny day while we were at the game that I had to continually drink plenty of water to prevent getting sun stroke.

Even though the Chicago Cubs lost 9-1 against the Philadelphia Phillies, we both had such a great time watching this baseball game at this Chicago landmark Wrigley Field.  With hot weather, tasty ballpark food and decent accessibility, the renovations should make Wrigley Field even better to check out the next time I am back in Chicago.
