After spending 4 nights at Rosabella Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City and then 4 nights at Lotus Boutique Hotel in Hanoi, me and 3 friends came back to Ho Chi Minh City for 5 nights at Quy Hung Hotel during November 2017. We chose a different hotel so that we could experience a different area of the city. It was still in the center of the city and was only a 10 minute walk/stroll to our first hotel.
The Hotel
Despite being listed as wheelchair accessible online at several hotel websites and their own website, Quy Hung Hotel had many stairs to get in. We saw pictures online beforehand but thought they had an alternate access to get inside the hotel since they claim to be wheelchair friendly. Every time I needed to enter or leave the hotel, we have to ask a staff member to help carry my wheelchair up and down the stairs. There were times where we had to wait a few minutes or the front desk person wouldn’t understand or seem to care.
There was only one tiny skinny elevator in this hotel and it was quite tight. The 4 of us could not all take the elevator together, so 2 would either wait for the elevator or take the stairs. It was even a bit tight for my wheelchair plus 1 person (who is wheeling me) to comfortably fit together in the elevator.
Room
The room was a decent size and both our beds were great. There was also a safe, mini bar, coffee and tea for us. The room was basic but it had everything we needed and we didn’t end up staying in the room that much.
The bathroom was quite small overall and the roll in shower had a slight bump to get in. If my commode chair hadn’t been broken on the flight arriving in Vietnam, I don’t think it would have fit in this shower anyways. The temporary small commode barely fit in with my buddy being able to get inside too.
Amenities
Since this was a cheaper budget hotel, there weren’t too many amenities to be found here. There was no gym, no pool, no free shuttle or anything. Quy Hung hotel did provide a free breakfast daily, but it was at a small restaurant across the street. I guess the hotel was too small to have their own restaurant inside the building, they had to have some kind of deal with the restaurant to provide for us.
Location
Despite the hotel not being wheelchair accessible, the location was great. With it still being downtown in District 1, we were close to lots of shops, restaurants and attractions. Ben Thanh Market is only a couple minutes walk/stroll from the hotel and is a famous landmark of the city. It is basically a giant flea market where you can buy handcraft items, foods, and clothing. At night, there are many food stalls serving delicious local cuisine.
Another place that we visited almost every day was just a couple steps from our hotel was Tous Les Jours. It is a popular French-Asian bakery and my friends and I would always grab a few baked goods to bring with us for the day. Prices were great and everything we tried was amazing.
Quy Hung hotel was not a good choice for my needs. I was surprised it is still listed today as wheelchair accessible, since we did make complaints. The room size was ok and the tiny roll in shower had a bump to get into. The free breakfast was good but it was located across the street. We all liked the location but too bad about the accessibility. If I wasn’t in a wheelchair, it would be a great budget hotel.
