Hostal El Triunfo Cusco, Peru

Continuing our South America trip in July/August 2015, after spending a day in Piura City, Peru, me and 3 friends flew to Cusco via Lima. We arrived in Cusco later in afternoon and had our taxi drop us off at Hostal El Triunfo. My buddies booked this hostel last minute before leaving Piura and we had to settle with this place which had many stairs to get inside.

The Hostel

When arriving to Hostal El Triunfo, we had to drive down a narrow one way bumpy road. That wasn’t the worst of it, to get to the front desk of the hostel, we had to go up 2 sets of stairs. I immediately knew we could not stay here for the 5 nights we had in Cusco. We figured we would stay the 1 night since it was too late to look for another hostel and figure out another place in the morning to switch to.

Room

Our room was a bit small but it surprisingly fit 4 beds for all of us. Since we were only staying at this hostel for 1 night, we didn’t mind the room at all. There is even a slight balcony that does give us a great view of the street below and the city.

I never used the shower during our few hours at this hostel so I don’t have a picture of the bathroom. I do remember my friends just saying it was a basic standard small bathroom and it wasn’t fancy at all.

Amenities

Since Hostal El Triunfo was a cheap 2 star hostel, there weren’t many amenities included. There was the free wifi which now seems to be the norm everywhere. There was also a free basic breakfast buffet that we definitely took advantage of.

Location

This hostel was really in a great location as there are lots of shops, restaurants, museums and more nearby. All of these surround Plaza De Armas which means the Main Square. Cusco Cathedral, gardens and a central fountain make this a very busy tourist area. Lot of benches are here too and it was a great resting spot for us.

We did visit this Main Square a few more times when we stayed at our next hostel because it wasn’t too far either. There are also a lot of tour agencies located in this area and this is where we bought our tickets to see Machu Picchu.

Hostal El Triunfo was another hostel that was not good for me. There were so many stairs to climb up just to get inside the hostel. Again, the only thing great about this hostel was the price and the location. I realize that I should stick to staying at mid price or higher hotels as they seem to have more accessible options. I am glad to have tried staying at hostels especially when I have 2 strong buddies with me and don’t regret a thing.
