The American Hotel Atlanta Downtown

By on October 21, 2022

Last month I visited Atlanta for the fourth time since 2019.  This trip however will be a short one because it was mainly to go camping at Imagine Music Festival at nearby Kingston Downs with a friend.  We arrived on a Thursday late evening and didn’t need to be at the campgrounds until the next day so we needed to get a hotel for 1 night in Atlanta.

The Hotel

I wanted to stay at a different hotel downtown than before so I could compare the accessibility with my previous stays and decided on the American Hotel Atlanta Downtown.  This retro 60’s looking hotel has some cool Atlanta history throughout the 315 rooms on 9 floors.  It was nicely lit up bright and looked very inviting when we arrived.

The main entrance had one big step to get into the front lobby, but luckily there was a ramp on the side with a button automatic door to get in.  The lobby and front desk area looked really nice and fancy and had a lot of places to sit and rest.  We had a friendly person to check us in and were ready to go to our room.

Room

nice big room

The room was quite big and was very roomy for my wheelchair to get around.  The accessible rooms come with 1 big soft and comfy Queen bed with lots of space for my friend to do my transfers to bed.  There was a mini fridge at the desk with the TV which was quite useful.  I was surprised there was an accessible balcony that provided a great view of Skyview Atlanta Ferris Wheel all lit up.

The accessible bathroom and the roll in shower was also quite big and spacious.  There was a removable hand held shower head along with grab bars and a fold up shower seat.  I did not get to use the roll in shower since my commode chair was temporarily lost by the airlines but my friend did get to use it.

Amenities

fitness center

This hotel has a few great amenities that includes a business center, a fitness center, a restaurant, parking, and a bunch of meeting rooms.  Since we only stayed the 1 night at the hotel, I did not get a chance to check out any of these.  My friend did get to use the fitness center and pay for the breakfast buffet at the restaurant.  He enjoyed both and had no complaints.  The free wifi worked well throughout our room and the entire hotel.

Pool

There is an outdoor pool on the main floor at the back of the hotel that we did not have time to look or use.  According to their website, there is a wheelchair lift for the pool for those that needs it.

Location

The hotel has an address of 160 Ted Turner Dr NW and is in an excellent location.  The very popular Peachtree Street is just a couple of minutes walk away and is full of restaurants, shops and other hotels.  It is right downtown and is a great area to meet up with friends for a lunch or dinner.

Lots of tourist attractions are only a few minutes walk away including the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, CNN Studio Tours, Centennial Olympic Park and lots more.

Final Thoughts

I really liked the American Hotel as it was in a great location downtown surrounded by so many restaurants, shops and main tourist attractions.  The price does reflect that it is a nicer hotel and has all the accessible features needed including a great room with a roll in shower and a ramp to the balcony.  Unfortunately we only stayed the 1 night before leaving but next time when I return to Atlanta, I will make sure to stay multiple nights to truly experience this hotel.
