Meow Wolf: Convergence Station Denver
When researching things to do in Denver and asking around, Meow Wolf was always mentioned as a place to visit. The description of what it is intrigued me and it was somewhere I had to check out.
About Meow Wolf
Meow Wolf is an immersive art installation and entertainment company founded in 2008. Convergence Station is their third location and the largest at 90,000 square feet with 4 floors available for the public. It is part museum, haunted house, theme park and film set.
Convergence Station connects 4 alien worlds as part of the Quantum Department of Transportation (QDOT): frozen Eenia, cosmic superorganism Numina, underground crystal mines of Ossuary and urban C street. Of the 300 artists who contributed to this project, over 110 are local to Colorado.
Getting There
A friend and I were staying at TownePlace Suites by Marriott Denver Downtown which was about a 10 minute taxi to Meow Wolf which was located in the Sun Valley area. When we arrived, lines to get inside were really long, but a staff member let us skip the line to buy tickets and to get inside.
The ticket costs $45 for my friend and $42 for myself with some kind of discount as they didn’t have a disability discount. They now have variable pricing with weekend tickets selling as high as $55 and weekdays for $40. Hours of operations also vary depending on weather, demand and special events.
After going through security and getting inside, there is an optional $3 Q Pass that gives you more information about some of the art installations. We missed out on that. What’s different from other places is that there is no signage at Meow Wolf. There are no maps, no information signs, no directions or no online descriptions of anything. We could visit any installation in any order we wanted.
We start at Transit Station after entering the building and is instructed to take the elevator and recommended to start on floor 4. Here is a recap of the highlights of each of the 4 universes of the Multiverse:
C Street
After getting off the elevator, C Street is where we start. It’s like a dark and dimly lit futuristic city with lots of bright neon signs everywhere. There is a flying car and a neon lit dump truck vehicles for visitors to climb in and touch and play with the buttons.
There is even a cool bus with the name “Sun Valley”, which is the neighborhood that the Meow Wolf is located in. I couldn’t actually get inside the vehicles but my friend did. There are also alleyways, shops, and even a laundromat that has a secret door to another room.
Numina
On one side of C Street, it connects to Numina which is the largest universe and spans across 3 floors. There are hidden tunnels, passageways and stairs that lead to the different levels but luckily there are elevators hidden throughout the complex that takes wheelchair guests to all the levels.
Numina is also very dark but is glowing with stars, unique vegetation and trees, bizarre creatures and different types of landscapes. Some pathways were a bit narrow but I could still get through. There are a few orbs and gardens that sing to you as we pass by and even the centerpiece spaceship talks to you when inside it.
Eemia
Eemia is a frozen ice world, trapped in a 1000 year ice age. The main attraction here is the bright and colorful cathedral. There are also lit up cathedral creatures, gargoyles and a beautiful central organ that is worth checking out.
There are also 2 giant navigator robot sculptures that visitors can sit in and take a selfie with. There were a few steps to get to the seating area so I never bothered getting right into any of the navigators.
Ossuary
The Ossuary is the underground world of the Convergence Station. There are a lot of rocks surrounding this area with many tiny rooms to explore. One of the main attractions here is the Ossuary Library since it is the hub of knowledge for the Ossuarians.
I liked the Reflective Passage room which is like a maze of mirrors room. It was a bit tight going in with my wheelchair but I still made it inside and it was fun being able to participate in the search to get out. The Daydreamers room was also cool since it featured a wheelchair user as an empowering figure.
Accessibility
Every universe is pretty much wheelchair accessible. Some pathways may be a bit narrow and dark but I never missed any of the areas. If I couldn’t go up or down the stairs in some parts, there were always another way to get there using elevators. There were also accessible bathroom stalls located throughout the building.
We didn’t eat or drink anything at the HELLOFOOD Cafe & Bar, but we did visit the Meow Wolf Gift Shop. There were souvenir shirts, stickers, cups and more but we didn’t buy anything from here either.
Final Thoughts
Overall, we really enjoyed the Meow Wolf experience and found the accessibility to be great. It was a fun mixture of bizarre and interesting art installations that were both immersive and interactive. It was neat to see the different art styles and techniques used at Convergence Station. We spent just over 2 hours here and didn’t get to see everything. It was definitely fun and I will be back in the future.
