My Top 6 FREE Things To Do In Sydney

By on October 25, 2017

While I was writing my blog post for the things I did in Sydney, I noticed there was so much I did that I decided to split up my blog post to things that cost money and things that are FREE to do.  Travelling can be very expensive so it is good to balance things out with some fun low cost or free things to do.  So here are my top 6 FREE things (in no particular order) I did in my one week stay in Sydney:

1.) Darling Harbour

It is a harbor in the city that is in the business district. There is a lot of shopping, restaurants and businesses and is also right by Chinatown.  This area is very wheelchair accessible and very easy to get around.  You can definitely spend all day here hanging out and enjoying the city.  Since we were here in February, there is a lot of Chinese New Year celebrations since there is a huge Chinese population in Sydney.

2.) The Rocks

The Rocks is another really happening area that is located by the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House.  This district offers both old and modern views from heritage buildings and cobblestone streets to new restaurants, pubs and shopping.  There are lots of souvenir and craft shops and The Rocks Market is held every weekend.  There is also a boat terminal here and many museums and very close to Circular Quay making it a popular tourist destination.

3.) Royal Botanic Gardens

The Royal Botanic Gardens is the biggest and oldest in Australia and is open year round and totally free.  It is located right by the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Central Business District (CBD).  There are lots of different plants to see and plenty of local birds hang out here.  There are many accessible paths and a few accessible bathrooms located here.  It really is a relaxing time to spend here and can be enjoyable for a few hours.

4.) Manly Beach

When you visit Sydney, you must check out Manly Beach.  This popular beach is about a 30 minute ferry ride from downtown Circular Quay.  The Australian Open of Surfing is held here every February but we missed it while we were here.  Manly Sea Life located in this beach is quite old and has no elevators to get to the upper and lower floors, so I was stuck only on the main level, while Dean took photos for me on the other floors.  There are also plenty of beachside cafes, bars and restaurants located here too, so you can definitely spend the whole day here.

5.) Bondi Beach

Bondi Beach is Australia’s most famous beach.  It is located 7km east of Sydney CBD and features shopping, cafes, art gallery right in it.  We took the Sydney Trains Network to Bondi Beach as it is quite easy and accessible to do.  The change room located right in the beach is quite wheelchair accessible and is an open concept.  The lockers are nearby to store your belongings and there are no shower chairs inside to use but the change and shower area is large and able to fit a wheelchair.

6.) Camperdown Memorial Rest Park

This big open green space is located right by King Street.  In the daytime, Camperdown Memorial Rest Park is very busy with kids, families and their pets and a perfect spot to relax in.  There is a lot of street art and graffiti surrounding the area.  The park itself does have water fountains but no public washrooms unless a big event is held at the park there are porta potties.  When we were there back in February, Fair Day was being held at the park.  It is Sydney’s version of Mardi Gras and all types of people are there celebrating.

Overall, I really enjoyed Sydney and thought that there was so much to do.  From my earlier post about things to do that cost money to my top 6 FREE things to do, I hope it makes you want to book a trip to Australia ASAP.
