The Rides at Disneyland Park
Since I will be going more into detail about all the rides I went on when I visited Disneyland Park in Anaheim May 2015, I thought I would have a separate article just for the rides. Check back in a couple days to see my new post about how I spent the entire day at Disneyland Park.
Disneyland Park is massive and contains of 8 different themed lands when we went in 2015: Main Street USA, Adventureland, New Orleans Square, Critter Country, Frontierland, Fantasyland, Mickey’s Toontown and Tomorrowland (the 9th being Star Wars: Galaxy Edge, which opened in May 2019).
I went on more rides than I normally do and here are the 8 rides I went on, in the order of what I did first and which “land” they could be found at:
Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters
(Tomorrowland)
Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters is based on the popular character from the Pixar movies, Toy Story. I was able to stay in my wheelchair as there was a ramp to get inside the ride with an open space for a wheelchair (see cover pic to see a pic of us in the ride). The ride is low thrill as it only spins around while riders use a blaster gun to shoot bad guys. There isn’t any steep drops or fast speeds here. It was a bit harder for me to use the blaster gun but I still had a lot of fun on this ride watching what was going on.
Space Mountain
(Tomorrowland)
After going on an exciting roller coaster in Vegas 2013, I wanted to try Space Mountain. My buddy had to physically lift and transfer me to this space themed ride and help me brace for the duration of the ride. The ride was very dark so we couldn’t really see what was happening. The ride would do twist and turns and go up and drop down. It was definitely fun but quite scary since I had to be held in.
Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage
(Tomorrowland)
Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage is based on another Pixar movie. Since I am not able to climb down a small hole down a ladder to get into the yellow submarine, they have an alternate experience for disabled guests. Instead of actually going underwater in a submarine to look out the windows for this ride, my buddy and I were sent to Observation Outpost at the end of the dock. I got to stay and sit in my wheelchair for this room, while my buddy got a chair to sit on.
Manned by a staff member, this facility offers a high def live video version of the voyage via a submarine cam. Here we go on a 12 minute underwater adventure to find the famous clown fish Nemo. We see scuba divers and other characters from the movie like Dory, Marlin, Squirt and more. Although, it would have been fun to go in the submarine, I am happy that Disney has this option. It almost felt like we were underwater watching the giant screens in the dark room.
Autopia
(Tomorrowland)
Autopia is a ride where we get to drive our own Honda car through a miniature motorway. This was very similar to the Bell’Italia ride at Ferrari World when I went in February 2014. My buddy had to transfer me into the car and of course, he got to drive. This was another slow paced ride as my buddy got to navigate through the curves and the inclines of the course.
Disneyland Railroad
(4 locations)
When we were finally done with Tomorrowland, we decided to take the Disneyland Railroad to another land within the park. There was an accessible train station at Tomorrowland and was told that there are stops at Main Street USA, New Orleans Square, Mickey’s Toontown then back to Tomorrowland. The only station that was not wheelchair accessible was Main Street USA which requires a few steps to get to the platform.
The last car of the train had a ramp and an accessible spot for my wheelchair. As we rode on the train from Tomorrowland to New Orleans Square, we went through lush landscapes, a Grand Canyon replica, robotic dinosaurs, wildlife and waterfalls. We were really amazed at what we saw on this relaxing ride.
Mark Twain Riverboat
(Frontierland)
After getting off the train at New Orleans Square, we headed to Frontierland to get on the majestic 19th century paddle boat called Mark Twain Riverboat. The riverboat was only wheelchair accessible on the lower level only. We got to see animals in the river, waterfalls and got to stop to see Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island.
On this island, we get to see how Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer lived as pirates. This area does have paved pathways and accessible bathrooms, but to fully get the true experience here, you would need to climb on bridges, forts and through dirt. I didn’t mind waiting on the pathway a bit while my buddy got to explore around a little.
Jungle Cruise
(Adventureland)
Jungle Cruise is a 7 minute ride on a boat through some of the world’s most exotic locations. There is an accessible boat with a ramp and I was really happy as this was a really fun ride. Led by our skipper, we got to see Mekong River which was home to baboons, cobras and crocodiles. There were gorillas and the beautiful Schweitzer waterfalls at the African Congo.
The Nile River had elephants, hippos and lions, while The Amazon in South America had anacondas and piranhas. This was my favorite ride that I did at Disneyland Park and while all the animals were just sculptures, the overall feel of this ride made it seem like we were in a real jungle.
Disneyland Monorail
(2 Locations)
There are 2 monorail stations: Tomorrowland and outside Disneyland Park at Downtown Disney. We went on the 7 minute monorail ride to exit the park grounds and eat at Rainforest Cafe Restaurant in Downtown Disney. The monorail was wheelchair accessible and since Disneyland Park allowed unlimited re-entries, we did not want to stay inside the park and deal with the long lines at restaurants.
After dinner, we saw a live band and decided to head back on the monorail back to Disneyland Park in time to see Fantasmic light show. We needed our ticket as proof of admission to get back on the monorail back to Tomorrowland.
Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California does offer a few wheelchair accessible rides that allow guests to stay in their wheelchairs. I had an amazing time and am glad Disneyland Park does have more options than other amusement parks that I have been to. I am really grateful that my buddy was strong enough to lift me into some of the rides. Follow and like my page as I will write about my full Disneyland Resort experience in the coming days, and I will definitely revisit Disneyland Park one day to try the new Star Wars rides.
