The Sofia Hotel San Diego
I always loved visiting California for it’s warm weather, sun and fun atmosphere. I planned on visiting a friend who lived not too far from San Diego so it was a perfect time to visit. I booked a trip to San Diego in May 2014 for a 5 night trip.
I usually like to book my hotels right in the heart of downtown in every city I visit since it is usually surrounded by lots of tourist attractions and things to do. I did my research and wanted to stay near the very popular Gaslamp Quarter district in downtown San Diego. I ended up choosing the smaller luxury boutique The Sofia Hotel.
The Hotel
My friend and I arrived early in the afternoon on the Monday and it was only about a 15 minute taxi ride from San Diego International Airport. The Sofia Hotel is located on 150 West Broadway and is set in a 1926 setting gothic revival building right downtown.
The lobby had automatic doors which made it easier for my friend to wheel me and all our luggage to the check in desk. We both automatically thought that the lobby looked really fancy and quite clean. We both liked the charm and the vibe that this boutique hotel had.
Room
The room was a great size and featured the usual things like free toiletries, flat screen tv, mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker and a safe. We both had our own beds and they were quite comfortable and soft.
The bathroom was quite spacious and had a sink that a wheelchair could pull up to. The toilet was a great height for my commode bathroom chair to roll over. The roll in shower area was a bit small but still could fit my commode chair easily. The removable hand held shower head was great for us too.
Amenities
The Sofia Hotel does have a few amenities that guests might want to check out. There is the standard free Wifi in our rooms and even a business center which we did not use. We did not check out the fitness center, spa, or restaurant either so I can’t really comment on them.
There is parking available for an extra fee at the back of the hotel. This hotel does not have a pool either.
Location
As I mentioned above, The Sofia Hotel is located downtown right by Gaslamp Quarter district. This well known area area is known for it’s nightlife. There are tons of bars, clubs, lounges, theaters and restaurants everywhere.
We really enjoyed eating at Taste & Thirst bar that was really close to our hotel. The food, service and vibe were all great. Pantoja park is also just a few minutes from us and we liked resting and relaxing at this public park and green space.
The Sofia Hotel is a great affordable boutique hotel right downtown by the Gaslamp Quarter district. I definitely recommend staying here and would book the accessible room next time I am back in the city.
