Holiday Inn Express & Suites Phoenix Downtown

By on June 5, 2023

Recently in April, a friend and I traveled to Phoenix to attend PHXLights music festival in Avondale, Arizona.  We started out in Phoenix for 3 nights and wanted to stay somewhere downtown that is close to the Footprint Center stadium and other attractions and restaurants.  We ended booking at Holiday Inn Express & Suites Phoenix Downtown – State Capitol.

The Hotel

front desk lobby and automatic double set of doors

Holiday Inn Express & Suites Phoenix Downtown – State Capitol is actually a new hotel that opened in 2021.  It has 4 floors with 119 rooms.  There are automatic double doors to get into the lobby which made it very easy for us to go in and out without needing to press a button or holding the doors open.  Everything looked quite modern and new and was already happy with this hotel.

Room

The accessible rooms only came with 1 King bed which was fine and worked well for us.  The bed did not have any space under it if anyone was to bring a portable lift.  The room was quite spacious as there was a mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker, desk, TV, and lots of closet space.

nice spacious room

The large bathroom had a sliding door which made it easier to get in and out.  It was nice and bright inside the bathroom and it still looked like it was new.  The toilet was the right height for my commode to fit over it with a few grab bars within reach.

The roll in shower was easy to roll in and it had a removable hand held shower head.  A flip up shower bench and a few grab bars were also there which I didn’t use.  The sink did have enough space under it for a wheelchair to come close to it.

Amenities

The free wifi worked well in our room as well as the rest of the property.  There is free parking, a fitness center and meeting rooms which we never used.  There was also a mini store with snacks and drinks right by the front lobby.

There is also a free hot breakfast buffet that my friend took advantage of everyday.  Items included sausage patties, bacon, eggs, muffins, fruit, hash browns and toast.  It was the same food everyday but it was good and free.

Pool

There is a gated pool at the back that we couldn’t actually visit.  We were told by staff that there were either maintenance or repairs that needed to be done.  Front desk person Aurora who was very friendly and helpful went to the pool area to take pics for me so I could add to this blog post.  Thanks!!  The pic does show both the pool and the hot tub having their own wheelchair lift being inside a private gated area.

Location

The hotel has an address of 950 West Van Buren street and was close to a bunch of restaurants like Church’s Chicken and Mc Donald’s.  The Japanese Friendship Gardens, the Footprint Center stadium and Chase Field are only about a 30 minute walk/stroll from the hotel.  Also a big strip of hotels, shops and restaurants are within a 30 minute walk/stroll too.

Footprint Center was less than 30 minutes walk/stroll from hotel

Final Thoughts

i really enjoyed my stay at Holiday Inn Express & Suites Phoenix Downtown – State Capitol.  It still looked quite new and the staff has been very friendly and helpful every time we needed anything.  The accessibility of the hotel and the room was great while the hotel had lots of restaurants, shops and sport centers are all close.  I would definitely stay again.

great help from front desk person Aurora and staff Loree
