Royal Caribbean Liberty of the Seas to Nassau, Bahamas

On my most recent cruise earlier this month, a friend and I went on a 4 night cruise from Fort Lauderdale.  We found a last minute deal and booked on Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas.

I will write a separate blog post about the ship and the accessibility later on.  This cruise did have 2 stops and this post will be about the first one at Nassau, Bahamas.

Getting Off The Ship

I actually been to Nassau back in early 2020 as a cruise stop on the Carnival Victory.  I figured this port stop will also be docked and it was.  This means that there is a big gangway ramp from the ship door to the pier.

After scanning our key cards to leave the ship, a staff member grabbed my wheelchair and helped me down the ramp.  The ramp is a bit steep so for safety reasons, staff always help.

Nassau

Nassau is the capital and largest city of The Bahamas.  Bay Street is the busiest street in Nassau and runs the entire length of the island from East to West.  It is located downtown in the city center and provides beachfront views and is right by Prince George Wharf which is the main port that serves cruise ships that has port of calls in Nassau.  It is very Americanized around this area with lots of shops, restaurants, banks and retail that could be found in any American city.

Accessibility

Once we got off the ship, we enter a shopping plaza that was connected to the port.  It was really easy to get around as the plaza was all flat and paved.  All the shops here weren’t that cheap so we left that area.

The surrounding area near Bay Street and the port had pretty good accessibility since it was full of cruise passengers and tourists.  Once we got deeper in the city, roads were more rough and sidewalks didn’t all have curb cuts.

Our Day

My last visit to Nassau was a bit short so I wanted to stay longer this time.  After browsing around the shopping plaza near the port, we went souvenir shopping in the city.  We also went to Starbucks to get a quick drink and used the free wifi.

Junkanoo Beach

We didn’t want to get further into the city in case we got lost and run out of time to get back on the ship.  We then headed to Junkanoo Beach.  My friend went for a quick swim in the ocean while I waited nearby.  There weren’t any accessible beach mats or beach wheelchairs.  It did start rain so we decided to return back to the ship.

Final Thoughts

My friend and I had a great 3.5 hours in Nassau.  I still have to revisit and get a taxi to check out the famous Atlantis hotel or Baha Mar Resort & Casino.
