Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas to Ensenada, Mexico

Last month, a friend and I boarded the Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas for a 3 night roundtrip cruise from Long Beach, California. There was only 1 stop on this cruise: Ensenada, Mexico.

I will write a separate blog post about the ship and the accessibility later on. This post will only be about my experience exploring Ensenada.

Getting Off The Ship

I have been at this port back in 2023 on the Disney Wonder, so I knew exactly what to expect. At this port, the ship was able to dock right at the pier. This means we do not have to take a tender boat to get off the ship. A large gangway is used as a platform connecting the ship to the port. A staff does help me and grabs my wheelchair handles and wheels me backwards to help me off the ship.

Since we didn’t leave right in the morning when everyone was allowed to start leaving the ship, there was no wait for us at all. We just had to scan our Sea Pass card to get off and back on the ship. We didn’t book any excursions as we were just going to explore Ensenada on our own and look for free WIFI.

Ensenada, Mexico

As in my previous post, Ensenada is the 4th largest city in Mexico with a land area of 20,000 square km (7500 sq mi). It is only 80 miles south of San Diego, where travellers can get a taste of Mexican food, culture, and nightlife. This port attracts a lot of people who likes to surf, kayak, horse ride, or mountain bike. My friend and I did not book any excursions as they weren’t really wheelchair accessible.

Our Day

After we got on land, we had to walk/stroll a short distance away just to make it to downtown Ensenada. The weather was sunny and warm as we went to check out some of the booths that were selling clothes, souvenirs and food.

We then checked out the giant head sculptures at Plaza Civica de la Patria before hanging outside the nearby McDonald’s to use their free wifi. It was getting hot outside so we went to get some cold drinks at a nearby convenience store.

We then passed by the very busy Historic Central District. There were lots of bars and loud music. We then started to head back towards the ship. We saw some religious march and took some pictures of the Ensenada sign and of the ship before boarding back on.

Accessibility

We only explored within a few blocks of central downtown of Ensenada and it was really wheelchair accessible. Not every curb had a ramp so we either went a different way or my friend helped me up the curb. I think if we were to visit the suburbs of the city, accessibility won’t be as great as the downtown area near the port was.

Final Thoughts

We only got to spend 3 hrs in Ensenada and it was great. We didn’t book any excursion but still had a good time getting some sun and using the free wifi. The docked port was super easy for us to get off and on the ship and was worth exploring for sure.
